There has been lots of exciting things happening in Whitley this February. There has been great schools work and catch ups between teams.

Team days

Team days are a great way to strengthen ties between our teams across the length and breadth of the country. It’s a chance to catch up and connect.

Re:Start and Reset Hub @ JMA The vocational programme we’re running with the students at JMA is progressing well!
We’ve had a few weeks of plumbing and painting/decorating, with the generous help of local tradesmen. Now we’re on to horticulture with council parks and green spaces workmen. We’ve started off with rose pruning and bramble clearing. Let’s hope the mild weather we’ve had recently sticks and that spring takes hold soon! The in-school work is also deepening; we’re starting to see the positive impact our approach is having on the attitude of the kids we are working with. It can be completely transformative to a child that has been constantly criticised and on disciplinary measures, to be genuinely asked what can be done to help them – and to then actually be listened to! We are using the room we have been given at school (our ‘Reset Hub’) to hold one-to-ones with students in which we explore what can be done to help them escape the behaviour-punishment cycle.
South Reading churches united service Psalm 133: ‘How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!’

A joint service was held at the Well on the evening of Sunday 3rd Feb, bringing the churches of Whitley together to worship as one. SYC brought along a presentation on the South Reading Joint Mission Strategy, showcasing the youth and families work which is happening across the area, and highlighting the areas in which we still have room to grow! Giving people from the local community the opportunity to get involved in local mission in areas suited to them.

Team day in Leyland, Lancashire

Some of the Whitley team travelled up north to catch up with the Leyland team to see the exciting work which is going in to setting up their new shop! Their gift shop, affiliated with SYC, is getting a new premises and is going through an entire rebranding. It was also a chance to say goodbye to Andy Prosser, their team leader, as he steps down. Team days are a great way to strengthen ties between our teams across the length and breadth of the country.

RESET HUB

The in-school work is deepening; we’re starting to see the positive impact our approach is having on the attitude of the kids we are working with.
