January was a great start to the year for the team in Whitley!
This January has brought about continued and exciting new collaborations between SYC and other groups in Reading
After multiple Christmas meals, festivities in our local parishes, travels and a period of rest; we resumed office on Friday, 3rd January. This was done primarily to begin the year with our monthly community prayers. We followed it up by driving to the four corners of Whitley and praying for God’s protection, providence, peace and love on our community.
Our Team Retreat Day on 18th January gave us an opportunity to gather outside of the office setting, reflect on the year that went by, share our observations and brainstorm ideas so we can play our part into bringing a positive transformation in the community. We also contemplated on our role and association with the Reading-wide networks.
Since Schools Work at John Madejski Academy is currently on hold as we wait for an MoU to be finalised, it has enabled us to look beyond and be of help to other groups in the meantime. Reneta from our team has been part of the after-school cooking club at Geoffrey Field Junior School which is attended by 12 children and run by members of the Reading Family Church.
They’ve had 2 sessions in January and Reneta says it has been an absolute joy to see the children eagerly waiting to come for the club, learn useful skills, chat with them about their day and how excited they get to take the food home to share with their parents and siblings. Reneta will support the RE Inspired team at Geoffrey Field’s Junior School for this term. They have completed one session with the Year 6 students on the Christian perspective of death and funerals; engaging them with notions of grief, legacy, and life after death.
On the other hand, Claire and Anika have met with several people in January to resume and in some instances to begin collaborating with different groups. For instance, with JAC (Just Around the Corner) to explore ways in which they undertake detached youth work and run the youth café bus; Reading Voluntary Action to support them with a session on ‘How to Organise a Street Party?’; and similar meetings with individuals from Reading Christian Network, ROC (Redeeming Our Communities). Besides this, both Claire and Anika worked hard to submit funding applications ranging from the youth café bus and IT support for the office.
We ended January with our monthly community dinner!

We are excited to see what this season holds for SYC and our community and are thankful that you are a part of this journey!
